The Buttery
A popular neighborhood restaurant and cafe, the South End Buttery expanded into a neighboring space on Shawmut Avenue to grow its bakery operations and provide a retail market, focused on take-out food and gourmet products. Distinct from its adjacent space, the market offers a fresh take on design elements from the original Buttery, such as a painted tin ceiling and carrara marble counter tops. Light wood floors, dark millwork, modern lighting and glass display cases create a distinct backdrop for the shop’s tempting prepared food and retail items. In keeping with the Buttery’s history, the second market at Clarendon Street features a warm but sophisticated color palette, materiality, and texture. Painted tin ceiling panels were used to mimic those found in the South End building history, polished carrara marble line the counter surfaces, and glistening glass display cases showcase the delectable menu that is made from organic and locally-grown ingredients as well as provisions supplied by local producers.
